Routers

The router is connected to two or more data lines from different IP networks. When a data packet enters one of the lines, the router reads the network address information in the packet header to determine the final destination. Then, use the information in its routing table or routing strategy to direct the packet to the next network in its journey.

Routers can provide connections within the enterprise, between the enterprise and the Internet, or between Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks. The largest routers interconnect various ISPs or may be used in large corporate networks. Smaller routers usually provide connections for typical home and office networks. Different types of routers can be used for different needs.
